A entrevista, que pode ser baixada (infelizmente em inglês...), contém informações que vários blogueiros tendem a "esquecer" quando citam o designer. A primeira delas é que Gerald Genta vinha projetando braceletes, caixas, mostradores, etc, desde quando se formou como designer de jóias (em 1950) e precisava de um ganha pão. Ele disse que precisava criar muito para ganhar alguma coisa, eis que para cada projeto só lhe era paga a quantia de 15 francos. Como ele desenhava para empresas subcontratadas, a maioria das "majors" onde seus desenhos foram parar sequer tem certeza se os projetos dos seus relógios foram feitos por ele. Tomemos, por exemplo, o Omega Constellation "Pie Pan"... Outro dia ouvi um podcast com o chefe do departamento de heritage da Omega e eles não podem confirmar se o projeto é do Genta. Tudo leva a crer que sim, pois o Universal Polerouter se parece com o modelo, e este definitivamente foi criado pelo Genta. Uma coisa, porém, eu não sabia ao ler essa já antiga entrevista de 1950: todos os modelos da Audemars Piguet dos anos 50 até o Royal Oak tem a mão de Genta.

For about twenty years, since 1953! I had
been creating for Audemars Piguet for
nearly 20 years, their entire collection. All
classic Audemars Piguet pieces are made
by Gérald Genta. Up until the time of the
Royal Oak.
E ele confirma algo que já ressaltei aqui, sobre os tais relógios "icônicos": existe muita bobagem criada em torno disso... O Royal Oak mesmo, segundo ele próprio disse, foi um fracasso na época, pois era um relógio grande para os padrões da época. Ou seja, o tal sucesso, a tal revolução causada pelo modelo, etc, é muito mais uma criação do marketing moderno do que algo que aconteceu de fato na época.
Sobre os tempos atuais, ele diz que detesta relógios grandes, relógios altos, excesso de complicações, pedras preciosas... E com toda franqueza, até mesmo porque já fez relógios com tudo isso, ressaltou que há momentos históricos no qual falta à sociedade o bom gosto e a cultura. Então, nós vendemos de tudo para essas pessoas! hahahahaha
The taste of the client is important. And
the client could be anyone from among us.
Historically, there have been junctures in
time when there were many people who
were utterly lacking in culture, in fine taste.
We sold them anything. Watches adorned
with gems in all possible colours. Rubies,
sapphires, emeralds, diamonds etc. They
were very fond of this kind of thing. And,
suddenly, that changed. Today, we have a
client base that loves highly spectacular
ornate watches, but not necessarily with
diamonds. Some love diamonds. Most love
technically sophisticated watches with a
lot of showiness through the use of Tourbillons, retrograde indications etc.
Continuando na entrevista, ele ressaltou algo que eu também não sabia: toda coleção Breguet da época foi projetada por ele. Ou seja, não só Genta criava coisas com sua assinatura, como também conseguia não fugir de parâmetros bem definidos.
O projeto do Nautilus foi criado, algo que também não sabia, enquanto ele jantava num restaurante e observava uma equipe da Patek no local. Em 5 minutos...
It is a watch that I designed during the Basel
Trade Fair. I was at the restaurant of a hotel
and some people from Patek were sitting in
one corner of the dining hall, while I was
sitting alone in the other corner. I told the
head-waiter: “Bring me a piece of paper
and a pencil, I want to design something”
and I designed the Nautilus while observing the people from Patek eating!… It was
a sketch that I completed in 5 minutes… It
very quickly met with success. I made the
prototype in my studio and its success was
accelerated.
Algo também interessante na entrevista é que ele PROJETAVA relógios e adorava fazê-lo. Mas não usava e não usa relógios!
Which watch did you wear at the time?
I will request that you don’t write this, but I
don’t like watches!
Why not write it? It’s impressive!...
For me, watches are the antithesis of liberty. I am an artist, a painter, I hate having
to adhere to the constraints of time. It irritates me.
And why not write it?
It is somewhat pejorative. However, though
I don’t like wearing watches, I do really like
creating them!... Personally, my interest is
more intrigued by a pair of high-quality
shoes, because they offer comfort, or by an
elegant piece of clothing, because elegance
forms part of my personality.
Algo importante também: Genta projetou 100 mil, isso mesmo, 100 mil relógios em sua carreira, mesmo ele não consegue se lembrar se um modelo de alguma coleção é ou não dele... Aliás, é impressão minha ou nessa frase aqui ele dá a entender que o Timex Ironman é projeto dele? Afinal, eu não consigo lembrar de algo da Timex, digital, que tenha vendido 30 milhões de relógios...
Have you also designed high-street
watches?
Yes. I designed the watch that was produced in 30,000,000 copies for Timex!
It was digital, naturally. But I have also
worked for Hamilton, Bulova and other American brands. They had always
sought to emanate a distinct Swiss-watch
‘aroma’!...
